Best Overall Offense in the History of the Organization

We were all willing to be patient and wait until Deshaun was healthy to start getting excited.  Then off to an 0-3 start and BOOM went the dynamite.  But then a few shuffles of the offensive line, and a glimpse of KeKe Coutee and we may have gotten a dose of better things to come.  But the absolute history making move, in my humble opinion, was the trade for Demaryius Thomas.  According to Ranker.com the Houston Texans top 10 receivers of all time include names like Jabar Gaffney, Corey Bradford, and BRAXTON MILLER!  Outside of Andre Johnson, DHop, and Will Fuller, all other receivers in that top 10 were drafted 3rd round or later.  So with KeKe Coutee playing this week, the Houston Texans are taking the field with the best QB, WR core, and TE group in the history of the organization.  This is what makes the talk of a possible move with Leveon Bell in the off season could have this city talking Dynasty if they manage to add some significant strength to the offensive line. 

Keys to a Redskins win you say?

1.  Don't let Adrian Peterson look like Adrian Peterson.
2.  Sustain offensive drives in the 1st half and keep the defense fresh to close it out in the second half.
3.  Pretty bad field conditions, come out of this game healthy, especially with those Titans around the corner.

WHY BILL?

As much as we have bashed O'Brien, I have to look at what he's tried to do long term. I have been against him trying to be OC AND head coach. But I'm reminded of the rumors of his battles with Rick Smith and how the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again. Some of the key things that are major differences from this organization.

• The Honey Badger is NOT Ed Reed, Ahman Green, or insert any washed up QB here.
• This team has seemed more prepared than in the past. We've heard strength and conditioning coaches along with how they are sleeping, and eating more this year than we've ever heard in the past.
• And let's just say putting Deshaun on a bus may have been funny or weird, but it actually WORKED.

I think the entire year last year Bill did things how he wanted them done, when he wanted them done and where he wanted them done. I don't know what the deal was on Savage, and how we could not make a deal to keep the best LT in the league, a line had to be drawn in the sand and the person that came out on the opposite side of that line was not Bill O'brien. Let's look back into what attracted us to Bill O'brien and how I feel this year's squad is coming very similar to the structure he had set there back in 2011.

In 2008, Bill was the QB's coach to Matt Cassle, after Brady went down with injury. They went on to go 11-5 without Tom Brady. As offensive coordinator this is where I draw my comparison and feel that this may finally be the season that Bill, who is to date the best branch off the Belichek tree, will make his jump to heir apparent of the Belichek throne. Now calm down I'm not giving the guy a yellow jacket. Just saying that we ran Kubiak out of here and on to Superbowl ring. Although there will be some who will continue to fail to give O'brien any credit if this team continues to succeed but will give him all the blame if they fail.

NO FULLER NO PROBLEM

I told you KeKe would be key and I continue to make that point. The year that Bill made OC for New England, and OH BY THE WAY, ended up turning down the Jaguars to interview for their vacant head coaching position, the Patriots went 13-3. The break down of targets didn't go to a WR1 or WR2. It went to this little slot receiver who happens to have gone to the same school as Coutee and actually coaches on our staff. I showed you Coutee's highlights. The biggest thing about Coutee is that he can also go deep and take the top off the defense. Adding Demaryius is just icing on the cake. The break down of targets (611) for New England that year was as follows:

• 38% 237 targets to TWO tightends
• 32% 198 targets to all other WR and RB's 9 different people
• 28% 173 targets to Wes Welker

Right now we are about right with 30% of the targets going to DHop. But the key is only 19% are going to tight ends due to their need to stay in and block, and 50% going to everyone else. The crazy thing is Coutee in limited action already has a whopping 30 targets. I don't think this Ryan Griffin move was all sickness. Could be Ryan not dealing with being benched well, either way I hope the guy gets better. Right now we've averaged about 32 targets per game with a low target rate to the TE Position. The Patriots averaged 38 targets per game and scored well over 500 points. I don't know there is a ton of targets out their for Demaryius if we get more production out of the tight end position. But he will be a much needed veteran that's been missed for quite some time at the WR2 position in Houston. I honestly feel that this offense now has the potential to be as nasty as the defense. And with the Honey Badger leading the way with the vigor and inspiration he has brought to the squad,, the sky is the limit.

FINALLY ALIGNED

I'm appalled at the people acting surprised that coach told Case that he wouldn't be more than a 3rd string QB. Some times a coach will say things to motivate you that may not be what you want to hear but be what you need to hear. All I know is we pulled Case off a Deer blind and gave him another shot at the NFL. When he left here the first time he had a couple of shots and didn't make it. The kid has an amazing story, but I don't know that this is a bad thing. After all he told Andre Johnson that he'd be a 40 catch guy, and Dre left us to go catch 41 balls for the Colts. So yea, I guess he was wrong. But seems I remember Kubiak getting fired a day after he took Case out of the game for Schaub. I may be wrong, but seems last season Savage was forced on us by somebody, and I guess we'll never know who, but whoever it was watched Savage get benched at halftime and when DW4 turned out to not be Schaub, it seems no one got fired. But I digress. I honestly feel that O'brien wanted DW4 all along, and that was the beginning of the end for Rick Smith. So far we didn't over spend for an offensive lineman in Solder, the line seems to be starting to gel, AND WE MADE A MOVE AT THE DEADLINE FOR A TRADE. A trade that we didn't give up our future 1st round picks, and we didn't throw away 40 million without at least meeting face to face with the player. Seems things are changing for the better. But we will still let haters hate. SHOUT OUT TO YOU BILL O'BRIEN and Brian Gain AND SEND MY LOVE TO JACK!!!

Anyone who remembers what Sunday's were like once the Oiler's left could not possibly be ready to give up on this team.  As a football town, and a town that has had the pleasure of celebrating SEVERAL World Championships, SURELY, there must be a mustard seed of patience out there for a team that saw 80% of its best of the best take a seat for not 1 or 2, but SEVERAL MONTHS.  Now you can blame the coaching staff, even Rick Smith, or even the man that we gave the key to the city when he brought Football back to Houston.  (Mr. Bob McNair)  But the truth is, there could be some very good reason to not hang our heads just yet.  However, the hope is sliding on ice already broken.  The scary part is based on our history, we should be due a large blow out and here's why:

Offensive Coordinator

Truth is Bill O'Brien came into the league without an offensive coordinator. Without an offensive coordinator, he won 3 out of the first 4 games, but lost 4 out of the first 8 games.  He also propelled us from a horrible 31st in the league offense to 14th in the league.  Scoring a whopping 372 points on the year with like 90 different QB's.   After the bye, and another lost to get to 4 and 9 on the season, the Texans manage to pull together 5 wins and only 2 losses to close the season.  Unfortunately, there was only 3 playoff teams on the schedule for the rest of the way.  They beat Baltimore, but lost to the Bengals, and the Colts.  All 3 remaining teams on the schedule had a combine season win total of 12.  With the Browns winning 7 of those 12!  Next Season you add an OC, but you still start 1-4 to start the season.  However, the second half you actually beat some teams that matter.  The 12-4 Bengals, the 10-6 Jets.  You get to the Playoffs and you lay an egg.  With one season as OC under his belt, you come out and with Brock Osweiller you win 5 of your first 8 games.  Again with Brock Osweiller, you go one game away from the AFC championship game, and you fire your OC.  The next season what do we do?  We start 3-3 out of the gate, and even with Deshaun Watson putting up the numbers and enjoying the success of a high powered offense, we went 4-12.  Now I'm a fan, through and through, and we had injuries last year, but we no longer have the softest division in the league where we can count on those AFC south games to get us to a decent win total.  We still lost those major games with the offense performing better than we've ever seen.  We once had a great offensive minded coach who had a great scheme, but no coordinator.  Now I'm not saying Rick Smith or Bob McNair forced the Wade Kubiak combination, but I am saying that it worked like a charm.  Not hoping anyone gets fired from the booth (ROMO), but there may be an offensive genius out there that could let a coach coach, and players play!  

KEKE DO YOU KNOW SPEED?

For the first time on national television I saw people start to pick the Texans to win.  We've never really got a ton of respect outside the local scene.  Even the locals seem to bash more than support, but we know most of them are just calling a spade a spade.  But after a 0-3 start, you can already see the sizzle start to fizz out and most have all but given up.  I was still very surprised that we didn't at least bring Dez in for a work out or try to grab Braxton back for depth, UNTIL I looked at the highlights below.  If you are looking for the bright side, imagine the guy in the highlights below on the field with Fuller V!  With that being said, click the link below to look at KeKe's highlights.  Enjoy it for the most part, but if you're not patient, skip to the very end to watch the 5:45 mark through the end.  You put this guy on the field with Fuller V and Dhop at the same time, WHO YOU GONNA DOUBLE?  KEKE IS THE KEY to getting back to scoring big.  I think he is the key to lighting up that box stacked against the running game.  It's very simple to me.  If he plays we win, and we win big.  If we put the same offense on the field, we'll get the same result.  So if he's not playing, and they didn't grab Braxton Miller off a practice squad, or sign another Pro level WR, then we deserve every bit of the butt kicking we will receive and shame on the entire aligned front office and coaching staff.

Complimentary Clock

To be clear, you can't allow your defense to be on the field more than the offense.  When you know your Defense needs rest that is not the time to throw into double and triple coverage.  We have had the number one defense in the league before.  However, you have to control the clock on offense in order to keep them fresh.    We have to sustain drives.  Especially if they get you the ball back.  No long drawn out explanation here.  We can't keep sending JJ to the emergency oxygen tank because we keep going 3 and out or gifting the ball back to our opponent.

I still feel this team is stacked with talent on both sides of the ball.  I also feel that we have to realize that the rust on these players isn't just about no pre-season play.  The majority of our stars went out starting week 3.  I said this at the beginning of the season, you don't take a year off, skip the preseason, and then expect to go full blast against Bill Belichek who knows your system.  Basically because he created it.  Then you leave and go play someone who practiced against you his entire coaching career, and then on to one of the NFL's best Future Hall of Famer one day, couldn't make the CFL the next in Eli Manning.  As easy as it would be to put this on Bill O'Brien, I still think the players have to play.  Most of these major injuries take a season and a half to get back to normal.  I think we get back on track in Indy with a very convincing win.  But history of the Bill O’Brien era says we may be still in for a major blow out before really getting on track.  Nightmares like Atlanta and Miami come to mind!  So I guess the question really is KEKE DO YOU LOVE ME?  ARE YOU PLAYING?  WILL WE EVER EVER SEE YOU?

Draft Purgatory

In 2010 the AFC South drew a line in the sand.  It was at that time that the Colts decided to not sign Peyton Manning after his 2 neck surgeries.  What had started to become a battle between the Texans and the Colts for the division, everyone often mocked the division as being the worse in the NFL.  After all, the last 7 years after Peyton left, the Colts lead the division in average wins at 9.  Only having one 2-14 season when they "sicked for Luck".  That was during the time we enjoyed playoff runs with Kubiak and Wade.  Bolstering our win totals up, even winning the division twice under that regime, and coming in second with average wins over the past 7 seasons at 8 games per season.  (Not including this current season.  But as we celebrated those 4 division wins over the last 7 years, the Jaguars averaged a whopping 5,8 games per season coming in last, and the Titans coming in 3rd with an average of 7 games per season.  With that being said, while we were celebrating Division wins over the past 7 seasons, the Jaguars and Titans were stock piling talent, trading down to get more talent, and not being uber concerned with the Quarterback position.  Now we sit in draft purgatory.  Too scared to give up more picks to go after Josh Gordon, Leveon Bell, or even Eric Thomas, and too early to complain about a General Manager that just inherited a team that wasn't even allowed to draft in the 1st or 2nd round.

No need to beat a dead horse.  But it just seems that Davenport wasn't having these issues when he played on the left side.  The rookie Rankin is not out playing Davenport when he was over there.  It would just seem the right thing to look at, would be putting Mancz in at Center, Move Martin over and either let Rankin sit it out or put him at Left Guard.  With everything being about the next man up, it baffles my mind the difference in formation and plays from this year compared to the magic we saw last year.  All the motion that confused defenses last year must be too much for Weah or Smith to handle.  Makes me wonder are we struggling at the WR position?  With Coutee unable to get on the field, along with Coates, makes it real confusing why we haven't at least seen a Dez in for a workout or heard any rumors as such.  When you look at the highlights from last year, trips left/trips right.  I just feel like I can hear Vrabel in his pre game meeting.  The reason we beat you last year, was because you guys just kept throwing the ball.  We just won't have him throw for more than 120 yards and you can't let the defense beat ya!  We saw success when we started playing the middle of the field today.  We have to get more play from the TE position to open up the middle of the field.  Is anyone missing Braxton Miller yet?

Fire Deja Vu

This couldn't be more hurtful of a start to the season.  The problems we have on the offensive line isn't going to fix itself in just one season.  Every season that O'Brien has been here it's been a slow start to the season.  This system is a direct replica of the one that has brought many Superbowl's to the Patriot's.  Whether we like it or not, so far, O'Brien has had the most success of any of the coaches off the Belichek coaching tree.  Don't get it twisted though, we were out coached by a rookie head coach, albeit someone who probably knows more about O'Brien's play calling than anyone in the league.  But I'm not here to offer excuses.  In 2006 we welcomed a coach with open arms after 4 horrific seasons.  Had no offensive line.  Carr was getting hit more than the people on ijustgothit.com.  We traded for Schaub and SIX season's later he won a Division title.  Back to Back even.  Then one year later in 2013 we saw Brian Cushing, Arian Foster, Ben Tate, Owen Daniels, Daniel Manning, all go on IR, and WE RAN HIM OUT OF TOWN.  Matt Schaub (Pick 6 Master) was the pick 6 king and we blamed Kubiak.  Both of your starting RB's were on IR and we blamed Kubiak.  Some say when Case Keenum struggled late and Kubiak put Matt back in the game, that was the nail in his coffin.  No big deal though, now Kubiak is only a 4 time Superbowl Champion as a coach.  Oh by the way, his short stint as offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, he made them the most successful they were on offense in 19 years.  More on Kubiak here  Look I'm not trying to defend the crazy decisions we've seen from the coaching staff.  What I am saying is you don't turn an NFL team around in 1 year.  This offensive system relies on the players to make decisions at the line.  The WR's have to be pristine route runners.  They can't be like Weah and Smith were they are having to be told where to go etc.  The crazy thing is with the Titans beating the Jags and the Colts losing today, 0-3 isn't necessarily the end all be all.  But we have to do something to either get Coutee and Coates on the field, or bring someone in who can stay healthy.  If Foreman comes back anywhere near where he was last season, it will at least be tolerable.  And if JJ didn't get you excited about things to come, or send a message to you today that HE'S ALL IN, then please give up your season tickets so I can finally move past the 2000 mark.  All I'm saying is we can't expect the Texans to make moves just so we don't have to listen to our friends down the road talk about our wittle football team.  Get me to the game after the Bye, and then we can talk about what moves need to be made.  Cause these penalties and not being able to get Deshaun enough weapons on the field, in my humble opinion, is not a good mix to add with bad coaching.  Hang in there my friends!
